The Great Canon, & Life of St. Mary of Egypt
St. Andrew of Crete;
St. Sophronius of Jerusalem
The Great Canon is chanted at Great Compline during the first week of Lent, and again in its entirety in one service on Thursday of the fifth week. Apart from these liturgical uses, it is fitting material for meditation on our failings at any time. The life of St. Mary, read at Matins on the Thursday of the Canon, is one of the most touching of all the lives, and well warrants reading and re-reading not only during the service but as often as we are able.
