In today’s climate of apparent “openness” and “modernization”, one might think this to be a dead issue. Far from it... the underlying question of the source of authority in the Church is fundamental to understanding how it is that the Roman Catholic Church (and its offspring, the protestant denominations) are not Orthodox, and indeed are something quite different from the Church of the Apostles and the Fathers.
