On the Mystical Life - Volume II: On Virtue & the Christian Life
St. Symeon the New Theologion
Abbot of the Monastery of St. Mammas in Constantinople at the turn of the eleventh century, St. Symeon was perhaps the most forceful advocate of the mystical experience of God in the history of the Byzantine church. His writings were sometimes suppressed by ecclesiastical authorities wary of his fierce enthusiasm, as well as his claims to charismatic authority, but they have endured and continued, to play a vital role in several renewals of spiritual life and prayer.
